If pain takes over the control over the body and the patient no longer knows where it comes from and where it is hurting, even for the most experienced therapist it can often be difficult to localise the cause and effect. In many cases it is a complex avalanche of pain which overruns the patient. Teeth, jaw areas, different facial areas, shoulder and neck pains which often stretch as far as the whole back and the lumbar vertebra area.
For a long time we have already known that these symptoms are not limited to single areas of the body, but that there are logical connections. Psychological stress should not be disregarded either. The individual treatment of certain areas of pain may lead to amelioration, however, this might not be a permanent solution.
Here a concrete anamnesis is required before the dentist can start the treatment. The comprehensive functional analysis covers physically perceptible pains and psychological stress.
In these cases a functional analysis helps to recognise the cause of these disorders and to determine a treatment accordingly. On this occasion, first an anamnesis form will be completed to gather the most important points: localisation of the aching areas, how the teeth are placed, condition of the teeth and the oral environment, of the neck, the shoulders and the spine. Causes and effects of preceded treatments already begin to show here.
Early contacts and grinding in the chewing surfaces of the existing teeth or the set of dentures can lead to the misalignment of the lower jaw. The misbalance of the jaw joint resulting from this can cause jaw joint diseases.
These misalignments can be identified only by a functional analysis. Their clearance can be different, depending on the case. Sometimes it is sufficient to eliminate early contacts or to once again bring the upper jaw or lower jaw back into the position determined by the joint by using a gum-guard. In some cases these measures are accompanied by physiotherapists.
