Dental Surgery

Within the scope of the dento-alveolar surgery our services include the following surgical interventions for out-patients:

  • Surgical removal of shifted or destroyed teeth
  • Treatment of inflammation in the jaw area
  • Mobilisation of shifted teeth before the integration in the tooth row
  • Surgical removal of abnormalities in the mucosa and the bones in the oral and jaw area
  • Surgical interventions for tooth preservation

Patients with dental phobia are especially prepared for these operations and taken care of sensitively. If requested by the patient, treatments can be carried out in half sleep anaesthesia or general anaesthetic.

Tooth extraction

A surgical tooth extraction becomes necessary in the case of brittle roots or, if the neck of a tooth is destroyed, strongly damaged or the root is curved or bent. Normally we can extract a tooth under local anaesthesia. If the tooth is in a difficult position or several teeth need to be extracted or simply by the request of the patient, the operation can also be done under full anaesthetic. After taking an impression we can fabricate a temporary set of dentures in our own lab, so that missing teeth can be substituted immediately after the extraction.

Wisdom teeth

If there is not sufficient space in the mouth, wisdom teeth cannot fit into the tooth row. They remain in the jaw, covered by bone (retention) or they break through only partially (partial retention). Reasons for a surgical extraction can be inflammation of bone and mucosa, danger of an impairment or movement of the neighbouring teeth and formation of a cyst in the area of worn teeth. If the wisdom tooth is situated close to the lower jaw nerve, a three-dimensional volume tomography is made.

Thus, the risk of nerve impairment can be minimised during the extraction of the wisdom tooth. Directly after the operation a draining elastic flap is inserted into the wound, which can be easily removed the next day with tweezers. Through this procedure, swells and pains can notably be reduced. The extraction under local anaesthesia is the rule. If requested all four wisdom teeth can be removed under anaesthetic as an out-patient or as an in-patient.

Therapy Centre

At our therapy centre Dental Phobia we offer the possibility of a dental treatment to particularly sensitive patients or patients with a phobia. Anxiety is unpleasant, but normal and in many cases a sensible feeling that may occur in every person. Probably the clearest consequence of extreme dental anxiety is the complete avoidance of all required dental treatment.

The patient with a anxiety disorder differs from a normal nervous patient in regard to how he handles the fear triggering situation. In cooperation with the Bergische Universität Wuppertal we introduce these patients to dental therapy by psychotherapeutics and specific treatment planning.
