Prophylaxis

The inflammation of the gums
(gingivitis / periodontitis) is mainly caused by the accumulation of bacteria on the tooth surfaces in the form of tooth deposits (plaque) which become visible for the naked eye only after days of growing. Bacteria and the toxins they produce stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body in essence turns on itself and gums become infected. This inflammatory process can cause a pocket to develop between the gums and teeth.

When the teeth are not cleaned properly the soft plaque becomes mineralized by several minerals in the saliva transforming it into hard material called calculus (tartar). This promotes the growth of plaque under and the development of gingival pockets under the gum line. The prophylactic aim is to remove these deposits thoroughly from the teeth and the corners by professional cleaning.

Initial phase or hygiene phase:

During the oral prophylaxis the causes of the periodontal disease are explained to you. Through our demonstrations you will learn how to use the right cleansing instruments to keep your teeth and your gums clean and healthy. Accessible tooth deposits and stains will be removed from your teeth. Thus the amount of bacteria will be reduced and the inflammation will decrease. The polishing of the tooth surfaces and a fluoride treatment will follow. Depending on the individual situation several appointments may be necessary.
