Costs of Periodontal Therapy

Which costs are accepted by the German statutory health insurance scheme? The costs arising from a systematic periodontal treatment can be refunded only to a small extent by the respective health insurance scheme. The following services are not refunded by the German statutory health insurance schemes:

  1. The costs of the required pre-treatment process of the periodontal therapy (individual prophylaxis, professional dental cleaning)
  2. The costs of the indispensable aftercare and control (normally eight weeks after the periodontal therapy), as well as all following auxiliary periodontal therapies to assure the success of the treatment.
  3. Teeth with gingival pockets <3.5 mm (however a tooth surrounded by a 3 mm pocket should also be cleaned during the periodontal treatment)
  4. Teeth with bone loss > 75% (according to directives of the German statutory health insurance these teeth would have to be removed. Nevertheless, for strategic reasons it can make sense to keep these teeth for the time being)
  5. Teeth with doubtful prognosis
  6. Additional services like the so-called Full-Mouth-Disinfection or the local anti-microbial therapy (bringing in of certain detergents) in the inflamed gingival pocket

Unfortunately, the statutory and the private health insurances do not accept all academically evidence-based treatment procedures to save one’s own teeth. Hence, the costs need to be partially paid by the patient. We will support you as much as possible to offer to you an optimal and individual therapy to preserve your teeth!
